Project: Supporting Survivors Through Volunteerism

Organization: NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre

The project “Supporting Survivors through Volunteerism” was also funded by the FIG Fund this year. The purpose of the program is to recruit and train up to 30 new volunteers on the 24-hour crisis, support, and information line. In order to volunteer on the crisis line, participants must complete 60+ hours of training including ASIST (suicide intervention training), modules from various community partners, including support skills, understanding trauma, recent or past sexual assault, etc. Providing training to 30 new volunteers greatly increases the capacity of their crisis line and support services, and supporting needs in our province.

The NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre aims to provide non-judgmental peer support and essential services to adults impacted by sexual violence, and to work towards the prevention and ultimately eradication of sexual violence through public awareness and education. Through the crisis line, if survivors wish, the centre can arrange in-person peer supports, accompaniments to the RNC or sexual assault nurse examiner, as well as various other community resources.
