Project: Wen’do Women’s Self-Defence Classes

Organization: The Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre for Hope

In 2020, the FIG Fund gave a grant to The Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre of Hope, a social service centre in St. John’s that serves the needs of vulnerable groups in our downtown core and surrounding areas. 

The grant was used to start a self-defence program for at-risk women in our community who are interested in learning self-defence tools and skills to assist and support them in everyday life.  This course is put off once a week and will provide women with skills to help them build self-confidence, feel empowered, and practice self-care. The program is completely accessible and is focused on inclusion.
