Project: Safe Harbour Outreach Program

Organization: St. John’s Status of Women Council

Adele Poynter became involved in an initiative at Marguerites place to help protect young women engaged in the sex trade. She secured private funding to hire an outreach worker to connect the women and make them aware of resources available to help them. The project was very successful and attracted more private donations and a government contribution.

In 2014, two members of the Safe Harbour Outreach Project (SHOP) were granted FIG Fund grants of $1500 each to help them move away from the sex trade and to provide them with support while doing so. The Safe Harbour Outreach Project (SHOP) is the only sex worker advocacy program in Newfoundland and Labrador. The mandate at SHOP is to advocate for the human rights of all women who have engaged in sex work across our city and province, both on an individual and collective level.
