It is located in HVGB and serves the Innu, Inuit and Metis in the Lake Melville area. The grants will enable the Centre to conduct a class in traditional rug hooking for 20 women in the Women’s Circle, an established group. The class will be conducted by Peter Barrett, a local artist. The objective is to teach women a traditional skill which will be preserved and which they in turn can teach their daughters and other family members.
Testimonial:

First and foremost, I would like to take this time to thank the Fig Foundation for providing us with the funding to do the Rug Hooking with our Women’s Friendship Circle.Β

Β We held the rug hooking workshop for 20 participants over 4 different classes. We actually had to do one of the workshops over zoom as our community went back into lock down from a large Covid- 19 outbreak. It was difficult to get everyone situated on Zoom, but once we got underway it was well received and we had comments such as” how great it was to take a break from what our community was going through at the time and just relax with a craft”.

Rug Hooking seems to be a traditional craft that was slowly dying in this province. However, since we had our workshops, we have seen more and more people engage in wanting to learn rug hooking and we also have a local rug hooking chapter here now in Happy Valley Goose Bay. There was a Rug Hooking guild here this past summer that participants from the workshop took part in.

Pete Barrett was the instructor who taught the craft, she showed all the different ways you could do a rug and how to finish off the boarder. Participants got to keep their hooker and frame so they could continue to master the craft at home.Β

This workshop was beginner friendly and you didn’t really need to know any specific techniques before hand. We had positive feedback, and they would like to see this craft offered again in the future. Please see attached pictures of the finished products.Β

Thank-You once again for providing the means to offer this beautiful craft.
