Project: EmpowHER

Organization: Carbonear Foodbank

FIG Fund Grant: $5,000

EmpowHER is a youth empowerment initiative designed to address the unique challenges faced by young women across the Avalon region. The project provides practical skills, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities that help participants build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of community.

Through workshops, mentorship, clubs, and an annual conference, EmpowHER aims to inspire young women to become leaders, innovators, and advocates for positive change. The project will engage approximately 400 young women by partnering with schools, community centres, and local organizations to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.

Outcomes and Impact

The project has demonstrated strong progress toward its goals:

  • Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem:
Participants gained practical life skills through workshops on financial literacy, car and home repair, and women’s health and safety, strengthening independence and self-reliance.

  • Enhanced Leadership Skills:
Leadership workshops and mentorship opportunities helped participants develop confidence, vision, and the skills needed to lead in their communities and future careers.

  • Improved Educational and Career Readiness:
Skill-building sessions and access to mentors supported participants in exploring education and career pathways.

  • Stronger Community Connections:
Mentorship initiatives and the upcoming EmpowHER Conference are building a supportive network of empowered young women across the region.

  • Greater Awareness of Gender Equality:
Workshops and discussions increased understanding of women’s rights and empowered participants to advocate for change.

Workshops and Engagement

EmpowHER programming was shaped through direct consultation with young women and female leaders in the community. Workshop topics include:

  • Financial literacy

  • Car and home repair skills

  • Social media awareness and safety

  • Logical thinking and problem-solving

  • Women’s sexual health and safety

  • Leadership development

  • Dating and healthy relationships

EmpowerHer Conference

An EmpowHER Conference is scheduled for March 2026, in celebration of International Women’s Day, hosted at the College of the North Atlantic – Carbonear Campus.

The two-day event will feature:

  • An opening ceremony and keynote speaker

  • Interactive workshops and guest speakers

The conference will welcome female-identifying youth and allies from across the Avalon region and will inform future EmpowHER programming through participant feedback.

Mentorship and Clubs

Following the conference, participants will be paired with female mentors from the community for guidance, networking, and skill development. The project also aims to establish the first EmpowHER Club, providing a space for young women to collaborate, support one another, and address local issues.

Looking Ahead

While some project activities were delayed due to increased demand for emergency services following the North Shore wildfires, EmpowHER remains a priority for 2026. Feedback from participants will guide future programming and expansion.

EmpowHER is committed to nurturing confident, capable young women who are ready to lead, advocate, and shape their communities.
