Project: Mommy and Pals
Organization: The Association for New Canadians
FIG Fund Grant: $5000
A program called “Mommy and Pals” is proposed as a support for newcomer mothers with preschool aged children. The program will foster information on healthy eating and living, with presentations, demonstrations and field trips. The participants, numbering 50-60, will largely be refugees who risk isolation when at home with small children, many of whom are single mothers. The budget will cover culturally appropriate snacks, honorariums for health and wellness guest speakers and transportation costs for the duration of the program. Translation services will be provided. The program is designed to be a bridge between vulnerable newcomers and the wider community.
